Israel is bombing the south of Lebanon and its fighter jets are destroying entire blocks of flats in the Shiite district of Beirut. The man behind the strategy: Defense Minister Joaw Galant.
It is mid-September, the war in Gaza has been raging for almost a year, and Joaw Galant routinely speaks to the television cameras at the Ramat David air force base. His eyes are dark as usual, his words are precise as usual, as if he were speaking to soldiers, not journalists: “The center of gravity is shifting to the north,” he says. “We have not forgotten the hostages and we have not forgotten our tasks in the south. This is our duty and we are fulfilling it at the same time.”
Then Galant says the words that go around the world: “We are at the beginning of a new phase of the war.” People from the north must be able to return home safely.
