On Friday, Israel bombed the southern suburbs of Beirut. The target: Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah. The escalation is massive.
On the one hand, the Israeli attack on Friday night fits pretty seamlessly into the dramatic picture of the past few days. Once again it hit the southern suburbs of Beirut, the Shiite-dominated Dahiye, the heart of Hezbollah. Once again, entire apartment blocks collapsed under Israeli bombs, burying dozens. Again, people from Dahiye fled to the center of Beirut, spending the night on the lake promenade, on Martyrs’ Square, on grass verges, while columns of smoke rose in the south.
The other side: The target this time was a very special one: Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah.
