Argentine President Javier Milei is still receiving a lot of ridicule for a UN speech weeks later. Because his advisor is apparently a fan of the series.
Argentine President Javier Milei is known for his emotional speeches, during which he shows as much physical effort as if he were leading an orchestra. At the end of September he had particularly profound words in a speech at the United Nations in New York:
“We believe in freedom of speech for all. We believe in freedom of religion for all. We believe in freedom of trade for all… and because in these times what happens in one country quickly impacts others, we believe that all people “We should live free from tyranny and oppression, whether in the form of political oppression, economic slavery or religious fanaticism. This fundamental idea must not be just words – it must be supported by actions: diplomatic, economic and material.”
However, as Argentine journalists quickly discovered, these sentences did not come from him, but from the political series “The West Wing – at the Center of Power”. The series, which ran on NBC between 1999 and 2006, is set in the White House and was particularly popular for its high-speed dialogue. Martin Sheen, Charlie Sheen’s father, played a US president who suffers from multiple sclerosis. He received a Golden Globe for Best Actor for the role of Josiah Bartlet.
Left Right? The main thing is grippy
Javier Milei’s speech bore a striking resemblance to that of fictional US President Josiah Bartlet in episode 15 of season four. And that is no coincidence. The Argentine media also knows that Milei’s chief strategist and speechwriter Santiago Caputo is said to be a big fan of “The West Wing” and seems to know passages from it by heart, like other Friends dialogues. And now used it as inspiration.
Even though the series is almost twenty years old, politicians’ phrases are timeless and, well, universal. Because you have to know that series President Bartlet, whose lines were used here for the right-wing conservative Milei, is actually a leftist.
By the way, the original text goes like this:
“We are for freedom of speech. We are for freedom of religion (…) And that is why we are for freedom from tyranny everywhere, whether in the form of political oppression or economic slavery or religious fanaticism. We cannot respond to this fundamental idea only with our support. We must meet it with our strength: diplomatic, economic, material.”
You can compare the two speeches in a video:
Javier Milei has already written off before
This is not the first time that Argentine media such as the daily newspaper “Página/12” has accused Javier Milei of not being very careful about the intellectual property of others. He is also said to have entire paragraphs written by scientists in his books.
Javier Milei has been President of Argentina since December 2023 and is considered a right-wing populist and ultra-conservative. He describes himself as an “anarcho-capitalist.” And superhero. There are bizarre things to report about the “crazy man with Wolferine hairstyle,” as the media has already dubbed him, but there is even more to report. So he gets political advice from Murray, Milton, Robert and Lucas.
His four cloned dogs.
