Fighting in Lebanon: Army: Ground offensive in Lebanon expanded

Israel is sending more ground troops to Lebanon. They are intended to help drive the Hezbollah militia from the border.

The Israeli army says it has expanded its ground offensive in Lebanon. The army said a fourth division had advanced into the northern neighboring country to reinforce the units deployed there against the Islamist Hezbollah militia. A division is a large military unit with several brigades and usually includes several thousand soldiers.

The 146th Reserve Division has been operating in the western sector of southern Lebanon since Monday, it said. Previously, other Israeli districts in the western area of Israel’s de facto border with Lebanon had been declared closed military zones. The other three Israeli divisions are deployed in the central and eastern sectors of the front, it said.

Hezbollah has been attacking Israel with rockets and grenades for a year – out of “solidarity” with Hamas in the Gaza Strip, as it says. Israel wants to drive the militia from the border so that around 60,000 evacuated Israelis can return to their homes.
