Heike Heubach: “Human, MP, deaf person – in that order”

Heike Heubach is the first deaf member in the history of the Bundestag. Here she talks about her beginnings in parliament and how she works there.

This interview is from the archives and originally appeared in June 2024.

Heike Heubach extends his hand in greeting. The reporter greets in sign language: thumb and index finger form a circle, then the outstretched hands open like a curtain – to say “good morning”.

Heubach is the first deaf member in the history of the Bundestag, which is why there is great interest in the replacement from Stadtbergen, Bavaria. Also because many practical questions arise. How does it work if she wants to give a speech in plenary? Or the shrill bell rings because people are calling for a vote – but Heubach can’t hear it? And why did it take until the 75th anniversary year for the first time that a deaf member sat in the Bundestag?
