Because the traffic light cannot agree on the necessary committee, the reappraisal of the Corona policy is in danger of failing. This met with sharp criticism from the CDU and the Left Party.
The acting left-wing Prime Minister of Thuringia, Bodo Ramelow, has called for a “comprehensive review of all state measures” during the corona pandemic. “I think it’s disappointing that the traffic light coalition can’t manage this,” he told the newspaper star. “I don’t understand this fussing around.”
Former CDU chairman Armin Laschet, who held government responsibility as Prime Minister of North Rhine-Westphalia during the pandemic, made similar comments. “If the reappraisal fails now, an opportunity will be wasted,” warned the member of the Bundestag star. “If we want to overcome the aggressive division in society, which in my view only really began with Corona, we have to come to terms with this time.” A part of the population was “excluded” back then, said Laschet. “We must not leave these people to the populists.”
Bodo Ramelow: “Rift through families and circles of friends”
Ramelow spoke of a “rift through families and circles of friends.” The AfD and BSW could score points with “conspiracy stories” because their propaganda was not countered in terms of content, he said. “The data on excess mortality, the international experiences from Sweden to Australia and the RKI’s internal files: all of this must be evaluated and analyzed.”
According to Ramelow, in return, incorrect political decisions must be dealt with transparently. “Personally, I have no problem at all with admitting mistakes,” he said. He cited the school closings during the second lockdown as an example. “In addition, it was wrong that the Prime Minister’s Conference ultimately became the most powerful body during the pandemic,” explained Ramelow. A federal crisis team of the federal government would be a better solution here in the future.
The traffic light coalition has been divided on the issue for months. While the FDP demands a Bundestag study commission, the SPD insists on a citizens’ assembly made up of randomly selected participants. After star-Information from the point of view of most of those involved, there will be no more decisions in this electoral period.
Laschet rejects citizens’ assembly as “toothless”.
Ramelow prefers a study commission with broad scientific support. “Committees of inquiry can hardly do this work because their focus is limited and often driven by party politics,” he said. In Thuringia, the BSW and CDU have applied for such a committee in the state parliament.
Laschet, in turn, explained that in addition to a study commission, he could also imagine a committee of inquiry. “I don’t think anything of a toothless citizens’ council,” he added. From the perspective of the former CDU chairman, the upcoming federal election in less than a year is not a problem. When setting up a commission, everyone involved would have to make a political commitment to continuing the work after the federal election, he said. “There is a well-established state practice for this.”
