Formation of a government in Thuringia: CDU leader: Formation of a government in Thuringia is making progress

The CDU and SPD in Thuringia have decided to enter into coalition negotiations; the BSW still sees a need for clarification. Thuringia’s CDU leader Voigt still speaks of a “huge step forward”.

Thuringia’s CDU leader Mario Voigt sees progress in forming a government. “It is a strong signal that with the approval of the CDU, BSW and SPD to the exploratory results, all three partners are on the way to forming a government,” said Voigt to the German Press Agency in Erfurt. The executive boards of the CDU and SPD gave the green light for official coalition negotiations with a large majority on Friday and Saturday. According to state spokeswoman Katja Wolf, the BSW is also prepared to enter into coalition negotiations if there is an agreement with the other two partners on the BSW’s peace policy demands.

Short-term talks on the peace issue

A wording on the peace issue for the preamble to a possible coalition agreement between the three parties should be discussed in the next few days, said Voigt. He confirmed that there would be discussions about this in Erfurt at short notice. The CDU is the strongest party in the possible three-party alliance and is aiming for the post of prime minister in Thuringia after ten years in opposition.

“People have a noticeable expectation that things will continue to go smoothly in Thuringia and that there will be stable conditions,” said Voigt. By agreeing to the exploratory results, which include, among other things, a reduction in bureaucracy in the administration, scope for investments or the introduction of free school meals, the three parties have come together behind joint projects. “That’s encouraging.” It’s about changes in politics and improvements for Thuringians.

That should also be the spirit of the preamble discussed this week. “It was already agreed that peace would also play a role,” said Voigt. However, the exploratory paper only states that there will be a formulation on the peace issue. That’s not enough for the BSW board.
