Shortly before the start of the Prime Minister’s Conference, the CDU vice-president warns about the traffic lights. She urgently needs to change course when it comes to asylum and security policy.
Before the state summit, the Union is pushing for significant tightening of asylum law and the fight against terror. Jens Spahn, deputy parliamentary group leader of the Union, said this star: “The traffic light blockade in the fight against terror and irregular migration endangers Germany’s security.” From Spahn’s point of view, the meeting of the Prime Ministers is “one of the last chances” to rethink. “It’s already five past twelve,” said Spahn.
Starting this Wednesday, the country leaders want to talk again about limiting irregular migration. The topic is pending star-Information at the top of the agenda. The Union-led states in the Bundesrat had previously stopped part of the federal government’s security package because they considered it too lax. It provides for tightening of residence and weapons laws as well as digital surveillance.
Deputy parliamentary group leader Spahn speaks of a “mini security package” and “half-hearted measures”. He is calling for significant tightening: “The standard is not what the Greens and the SPD can agree on with the last of their strength. The standard must be what is necessary to solve the problems,” said Spahn star.
Spahn calls for rejections at the borders
The Union had recently spoken out in the Bundestag in favor of significantly tougher measures to reduce the number of asylum seekers. “We need more extensive powers for the police and rejections at the border,” said Spahn. To do this, the federal government would have to invoke an emergency situation in order not to have to apply EU law, which conflicts with such rejections, as an exception. This is legally possible.
Before the state summit, Spahn called on the SPD to cooperate more with the Union: “The majorities are there if the SPD wants to move.” His party colleague Michael Kretschmer had previously called on the Social Democratic prime ministers to cooperate more on asylum policy in the “Tagesspiegel”. These would be much more pragmatic than the SPD parliamentary group, said Kretschmer.
The state summit will take place from Wednesday to Friday in Leipzig and will be chaired by the state of Saxony. In addition to asylum policy, the financial situation of municipalities, government support for the ailing auto industry and reforms of public broadcasting will be discussed, among other things.
