New footage: What are North Korean soldiers doing in Russia?

Evidence of North Korean soldiers in Russia is increasing. Several states want to have reliable evidence. What role do North Koreans play in the war against Ukraine?

South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol has described the sending of North Korean soldiers to Russia as a “provocation” and announced a reaction. “South Korea will not remain idle,” Yoon said on Thursday after talks with Polish President Andrzej Duda. Both countries agree that the deployment is a provocation “that threatens global security beyond the Korean peninsula and Europe.”

The USA and NATO confirmed the stationing of North Korean soldiers in Russia on Wednesday. The spokesman for the National Security Council in Washington, John Kirby, said that the US government currently assumes that at least 3,000 soldiers have been deployed to eastern Russia.

NATO spokeswoman Farah Dakhlallah said in Brussels that there was “evidence” that North Korean soldiers were being sent to Russia. If these troops are destined to fight in Ukraine, “it would represent a significant escalation of North Korea’s support for Russia’s illegal war.” The North Atlantic Council will discuss a response shortly.

South Korean intelligence announced on Friday that 1,500 North Korean soldiers had been transferred to Russia. Accordingly, they will complete training in eastern Russia and will then be sent to the front in Ukraine. On Wednesday, South Korean intelligence announced that 1,500 more soldiers from North Korea had been sent to Russia. According to estimates from Seoul, Pyongyang could send a total of around 12,000 soldiers.
