Money makes the world go round, they say. But how big is the influence of money in the US election? An American political scientist classifies – and contradicts an insider.
“There are two things that are important in politics,” Republican strategist Mark Hanna once said in the run-up to the 1896 presidential election. “The first is money, and the second I can’t remember.”
His words still apply today: Kamala Harris not only breathed new life into the Democratic Party with her presidential candidacy, she is also fueling the fundraising race against Donald Trump. Backers from Silicon Valley to Wall Street are enthusiastically pulling out their checkbooks. The number of first-time donors has skyrocketed. In its first week, her campaign reported record revenue of $200 million.
