Not only Jewish people, but also Muslims complain about increasing hostility. One indicator of this is the police statistics.
The number of people injured in Islamophobic crimes in Germany is increasing. This emerges from a response from the federal government to a parliamentary question from MP Petra Pau (Die Linke), which has been submitted to the German Press Agency. According to this, in the first three quarters of this year, the police authorities counted 42 people injured nationwide as a result of crimes that were believed to have an Islamophobic motive, including four seriously injured people. Since crimes are sometimes not reported directly or an Islamophobic motive is often only discovered during the course of the investigation, these figures are provisional.
In the request made by Pau a year earlier, the federal government reported 28 slightly injured people in the first three quarters of 2023, citing figures from the security authorities.
The government’s response paints a worrying picture, said Pau. There were 117 fewer crimes reported in the third quarter of this year than in the second quarter, when there were 139 crimes. But the attacks are becoming increasingly brutal. “The increasing number of victims of violence illustrates how serious the threat is to people who are perceived as Muslim and how decisive measures for protection and prevention are necessary,” said Pau.
