Donald Trump will start his second term as US President in January 2025 – but he had a four-year break after his first. Can he run again in four years?
He has made his comeback: Donald Trump will move back into the White House next year, where he resided from 2017 to 2021.
The Republican is only the second US president in history to be re-elected to office after an interruption. Grover Cleveland achieved this for the first time in 1893. The Democrat had previously been US President from 1885 to 1889.
Can Donald Trump run for a third term?
Unless something happens, Trump will remain the most powerful man in the world until 2029. The next scheduled presidential election in the United States is scheduled to take place in November 2028. Would the then 82-year-old be allowed to be elected to office for a third time? The answer is provided by the 22nd Amendment to the US Constitution. He clearly states:
No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice (…)
So: “No one may be elected to the office of president more than twice (…)”
As long as this amendment, which came into force in 1951, is in effect, the four-year interruption of Trump’s time in the White House will have no impact on his eligibility in 2028: he will not be allowed to run again.
In any case, the Republican had recently emphasized that he did not want to run again – even if he had lost to Kamala Harris in the recent election.
Trump clearly won the US presidential election this Wednesday against his Democratic competitor, incumbent Vice President Kamala Harris. In 2016 he defeated Hillary Clinton and lost to Joe Biden in 2020. Trump’s second term begins on January 20, 2025 with the inauguration in the US capital Washington, DC.
