Relations between the USA and China have been strained for a long time. After Donald Trump’s election victory, China’s head of state congratulates him – and expresses expectations for the future relationship.
China’s head of state and party leader Xi Jinping has warned Donald Trump against taking a confrontational course after his re-election as US President. History has shown that the People’s Republic and the United States benefit from cooperation, while strife harms both, Xi said in his congratulatory message, according to Chinese state media. A stable and healthy relationship between Beijing and Washington is also the expectation of the international community. China hopes that differences of opinion will be “handled appropriately” and that “correct” interactions will be maintained. According to US broadcaster CNN, Trump and Xi spoke to each other on the phone.
The relationship between the world’s two largest economies has been extremely tense for some time. Some experts see it at a low point. Already during his first term as president, Trump took a tough line towards China. During the election campaign, he threatened further tariffs on Chinese products, which could have a massive impact on global trade. The trade hurdles put up by both sides have been straining relations for a long time.
