After a bitter budget dispute, Chancellor Scholz announced Christian Lindner’s dismissal and new elections. In a statement, Robert Habeck regrets the break in the coalition.
They often argued. “Nevertheless, I want to say for us that this feels wrong and not right tonight, downright tragic on a day like this, when Germany has to show unity and the ability to act in Europe,” emphasized Habeck.
Although possible solutions were on the table, the budget gap could not be closed. “The FDP was not prepared to go down these paths.” Lindner’s dismissal was ultimately as logical as it was unnecessary. The government will be in office until possible new elections in the spring and “decided to fully fulfill the duties of the office,” said Habeck. “Starting tomorrow, the work will continue.”
