An American was arrested in Frankfurt/Main on suspicion of espionage. According to federal prosecutors, he offered to provide China with secret information.
The Federal Prosecutor’s Office has had an American arrested in Frankfurt am Main for suspected spying for China. He is said to have offered sensitive US military information to a Chinese intelligence service. She accuses the man of agreeing to act as an intelligence agent for a foreign secret service.
Until recently, he worked for the US armed forces in Germany and in this context he came across the information that was supposed to be transmitted. This year he contacted Chinese government authorities and offered to pass it on. What the information was about remained unclear at first.
Officials from the Federal Criminal Police Office arrested the man, the Federal Prosecutor’s Office also announced. The accused’s apartment will also be searched. An investigating judge at the Federal Court of Justice (BGH) in Karlsruhe is expected to decide later today whether the American will be remanded in custody. An exact time for this was not known.
Suspicion of espionage calls the authorities into action
The Federal Prosecutor’s Office worked closely with the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution during the investigation, the statement said. As the highest prosecution authority in Germany, the Federal Prosecutor’s Office is responsible, among other things, for cases of espionage and terrorism.
