Grand coalition, black-green, black-yellow, Jamaica: There are many possible government coalitions. But none of them spark enthusiasm among citizens.
“Joke of History”: So called star-Politics chief Veit Medick in the ARD press club on Sunday raised the prospect that after the upcoming federal election, a grand coalition of CDU/CSU and SPD could run to resolve the reform backlog left behind by their GroKo predecessors between 2013 and 2021. Many citizens apparently see it the same way. Like a representative Forsa survey commissioned by star showed that only a third of voters want such a government after the upcoming federal election. However, all other coalition options are even less popular: only 17 percent of voters support a black-green alliance, 15 percent support one made up of the CDU/CSU, the Greens and the FDP, only four percent support a coalition made up of the CDU/CSU, the Greens and the FDP.
One thing is clear: a clear majority of 70 percent want the Union to be involved in the new government.
Their candidate for chancellor, Friedrich Merz, is avoiding making a clear coalition statement in the current election. The CDU leader emphasizes that his party will not provide the FDP with a second vote. “The FDP is our political competitor, like everyone else in the middle democratic spectrum,” said Merz. That shouldn’t please supporters of the FDP. According to the new Forsa survey commissioned by the, 71 percent of them support star an alliance with the Union after the election. If the FDP manages to overcome the five percent hurdle and enter parliament again.
Grand coalition? Better than black-green, say Union voters
What is striking is how different the coalition preferences are among voters of the different parties. A new grand coalition finds the greatest support among all alliance variants among voters from the CDU/CSU and SPD. A majority of 66 percent of SPD supporters support it (Union voters: 43 percent). The largest group of Green supporters, at 48 percent, wants a black-green government alliance.
CDU chancellor candidate Merz is broadcasting in conversation with star friendly signals to the Economics Minister and designated candidate for Chancellor of the Greens, Robert Habeck. He was “a pleasant conversation partner,” said Merz. “Humanly we get along, politically we’re pretty far apart.”
According to the Forsa survey, the majority of AfD and BSW supporters support other government alliances after the election.
