Scholz as a candidate for chancellor? SPD leader in the Bundestag confirms “grumbling” in the party

Unlike the Union, the SPD has not yet chosen a candidate for chancellor for the new election date. And not all Social Democrats agree, as the group leader admits.
SPD parliamentary group leader Rolf Mützenich has admitted that there are debates in his party about the ideal candidate for chancellor. “Yes, there is grumbling. Of course there are these voices too,” said Mützenich on ZDF’s “heute journal”. In the end, the party knows that it can only win together. When asked whether this would happen with Olaf Scholz, Mützenich replied: “I am firmly convinced of that.”
SPD is betting on victory in new elections
Now, until election day on February 23rd, it’s about showing people “what the Chancellor has – namely competence, experience, integrity.” Scholz will stand out strongly from Union Chancellor candidate Friedrich Merz. By breaking the traffic light coalition, Scholz is now freer and can show in the election campaign what is possible with a social democratic chancellor.
The SPD will not focus the next few months on becoming a junior partner in a Union-led government, but rather play for victory. “And I’m absolutely sure that it can still be achieved,” emphasized Mützenich.
