After the traffic light went out, the Chancellor was once again concerned with foreign policy. He will hold several bilateral talks on the sidelines of the G20 summit. One of them is particularly interesting.

Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) will meet Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The conversation next Tuesday will focus on economic and security issues, according to German government circles.

Specifically, the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine was mentioned, in which North Korean troops are now also taking part. Beijing’s state subsidies for electric cars had also recently caused trouble between the EU and China, to which the European Union responded with punitive tariffs in October against the Chancellor’s resistance.

Scholz last met Xi in April during a trip to China in Beijing. Outgoing US President Joe Biden will speak to Xi on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Community (APEC) summit in Peru on Saturday.

The Chancellor will hold further bilateral discussions during the G20 summit with the host, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, as well as with the presidents of South Africa, Vietnam and Singapore. Because of the domestic political situation after his traffic light government collapsed, he shortened his trip. Contrary to what was originally planned, he will not travel on from Rio to Mexico, but will fly back to Berlin on Tuesday afternoon.
