It is unclear how long Nancy Faeser will continue to be Federal Minister of the Interior. She wants to settle some personnel before the new election. But it shouldn’t be a lonely decision, she says.
Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD) wants to decide the successor at the top of the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution before the new elections scheduled for February 23rd. In response to a corresponding question, she replied to the German Press Agency: “I would like to cast beforehand.” She left it open who would take over the position. Faeser added: “But I would also do this in consultation with the democratic factions.”
The President of the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution, Thomas Haldenwang, informed Faeser on Monday evening that he was planning to run for the CDU in the federal election. It had been known for some time that Haldenwang wanted to retire soon. Faeser informed the members of the Interior Committee on Wednesday that “due to his announced candidacy for the German Bundestag, Mr. Haldenwang will no longer carry out his official duties as President of the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution with immediate effect.” The domestic secret service should initially be headed by its two vice presidents, Sinan Selen and Silke Willems.
