In his first term, Donald Trump wore out four speakers. The filling of the position for the second round is a record-breaking appointment.
US President-elect Donald Trump has chosen a 27-year-old employee as his future spokeswoman in the White House. Trump said in a written statement that Karoline Leavitt, who had previously been a spokeswoman for his campaign, would take on the role. Leavitt had already worked in the press office at the US government headquarters at the end of Trump’s first term in office (2017 to 2021). The 78-year-old explained that she was “smart,” “tough” and had proven to be an extremely effective communicator. According to US media, Leavitt will be the youngest person to ever hold this high-profile job.
Those who officially speak for the White House are usually very present as the face of the government and give daily press conferences at government headquarters. However, things were different in Trump’s first term. At times there were no White House press briefings at all. A spokeswoman at the time, Stephanie Grisham, left the post after several months without doing a single press briefing. Instead, Trump often gave long press conferences himself or took questions from reporters. At the same time, he denigrated the media then and now as “enemies of the people.”
In his first four years in office, Trump had a total of four spokespeople: Sean Spicer, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, Stephanie Grisham and finally Kayleigh McEnany.
