After Georgia election: Authority confirms controversial result

There is controversy over the parliamentary election in the Black Sea Republic of Georgia, which has been accompanied by allegations of fraud. Now the electoral commission has announced the official final result.

The electoral commission of the South Caucasus Republic of Georgia has confirmed the controversial victory of the ruling Georgian Dream party in the parliamentary election, which was overshadowed by allegations of fraud. In the official final result, according to local media, the authority still awarded the ruling party of billionaire Bidzina Ivanishvili with around 54 percent of the vote in the election on October 26th, and thus 89 out of 150 seats in parliament.

The pro-Western opposition therefore has a total of 61 seats. However, the parties had announced that they would not take up their mandates. According to the Georgian constitution, parliament must meet for the first time within ten days of the announcement of the official final result.

After the election, the pro-European president and pro-Western opposition declared that they did not recognize the result. Georgian and international observers found numerous violations. Since then, the pro-Western opposition and its supporters have been protesting almost daily, especially in the capital Tbilisi. Recently, however, significantly fewer people took to the streets.
