Police completely break up Tesla protest camp

Environmental activists refuse to leave their treehouses. Initially it was a temporary exploration of explosive ordnance. Now the police are completely dismantling the forest occupiers’ camp.

The police break up the protest camp of Tesla opponents in the forest near the car factory in Grünheide near Berlin. As the police headquarters announced, the meeting will be dissolved due to violations of public safety and order. Environmental activists have been occupying a forest in Grünheide since the end of February and are protesting against the US company’s only European car factory, which is run by billionaire Elon Musk.

The environmental activists repeatedly violated regulations and committed crimes, said police spokesman Daniel Keip. It was also not possible to establish contact with the meeting management. A peaceful outcome can no longer be assumed.

Tesla opponents are climbing to great heights

The police have been on duty in the protest camp since Monday. The environmental activists were initially only supposed to temporarily clear part of their forest camp with tree houses because of a planned explosive ordnance search. But the Tesla opponents refused and sometimes climbed to great heights between the trees. On Monday, police high-altitude rescuers took six people out of tree houses because they didn’t want to leave voluntarily.

The “Turn Off the Tap to Tesla” alliance condemned the police action. “Under the pretext of an explosive ordnance probe, freedom of assembly is being trampled on this morning and the will of Elon Musk and Co. is being pushed through,” said press spokeswoman Karolina Drzewo. Politicians are exposing themselves and becoming Tesla’s henchmen against the will of the majority.

The electric car manufacturer Tesla wants to expand its area in Grünheide for a freight station and storage space and to buy a forest area from the state of Brandenburg. “Discussions are ongoing with Tesla,” said a spokesman for the Environment and Forestry Ministry in Potsdam. The area near the car factory has been under investigation for a long time because of suspected explosive weapons.
