Head of the Ruhr SPD in the Bundestag calls for Pistorius to run for chancellor: “Need a new start”

The resistance against Chancellor Olaf Scholz is growing: Martin Töns, spokesman for the Ruhr SPD in the Bundestag, is now also speaking out in favor of Pistorius as a candidate for chancellor.

The spokesman for the Ruhr-SPD in the Bundestag, the group of social democratic MPs from the Ruhr area, opposes Olaf Scholz and calls for Boris Pistorius to run for chancellor. “The Chancellor did a good job in a very difficult situation. But we have now reached the end of a coalition and need a new start,” said Markus Töns star. “It would be easier with Boris Pistorius than with Olaf Scholz.”

Töns also calls for a clear emphasis on economic policy in the election campaign. “It is very important that we put industrial and economic policy and the security of the associated jobs at the forefront of our election campaign and the focus of our political work in the coming years. We have two years of recession. People are unsettled. We have to act now and cannot leave it to Friedrich Merz and the CDU.”

SPD candidacy for chancellor “must be decided now”

The spokesman for the Seeheimer Kreis, Uwe Schmidt, also called for quick clarification – regardless of the direction. “The question of the candidate for chancellor must now be decided quickly by the party leadership,” said Schmidt star. “I could live with both. After the clarification: wipe your mouth, move on. We have no time to waste.”

For days there have been voices in the SPD who have spoken out in favor of Boris Pistorius because they believe that, according to surveys, the SPD would have better chances with the defense minister. Other SPD politicians, however, are in favor of a quicker nomination of Scholz in order to end the debate within the party.

On Monday evening, two leading SPD members of the Bundestag from North Rhine-Westphalia spoke out with doubts for the first time. “The focus is on the question of what the best political formation is now for this federal election. We are hearing a lot of support for this,” said the two chairmen of the NRW-SPD state group in the Bundestag, Dirk Wiese and Wiebke Esdar, and reported one critical debate in the constituencies.

The statement is explosive and also significant because Esdar is co-chair of the Parliamentary Left group and the co-chair of the conservative Seeheimer Circle in the SPD parliamentary group. It also sparked outrage within the state group because it was not decided in the NRW state group. In addition, the statements by Wiese and Esdar contradict the statements of the SPD party leaders, the parliamentary group leader Rolf Mützenich, who also comes from North Rhine-Westphalia, and the SPD general secretary Matthias Miersch, who all recently clearly spoke out and declared the debate over.

A report in the “Bild” newspaper, according to which the inner party leadership wanted to meet for a “crisis summit” on Tuesday evening to discuss the candidacy for chancellor, was denied by the Willy Brandt House. “The report is false,” said an SPD spokeswoman. “There is no meeting, but a regular conference call with the deputy party leaders to organize the early election campaign in terms of dates and deadlines.”
