Ukraine has fired long-range missiles from the USA into Russian territory for the first time. The Russian Foreign Minister declares that this is a “new phase” of the war.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has announced an “appropriate” response to the Ukrainian shelling of Russian territory with ATACMS missiles. “If longer-range missiles are deployed from Ukraine towards Russian territory, it means that they are operated by US military experts,” Lavrov told reporters in Rio de Janeiro on Tuesday after the G20 summit. Meanwhile, a senior Ukrainian official confirmed to AFP that Ukraine had used ATACMS in an attack on Russia’s Bryansk region.
ATACMS missiles on Russia: Lavrov indirectly threatens with nuclear arsenal
Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov said of the shelling: “We will view this as a new phase of the Western war against Russia and respond accordingly.” It is a “sign” from Ukraine and its Western allies that they are seeking escalation.
Speaking to Ukraine’s Western allies, Lavrov added that they should read Russian nuclear doctrine “in its entirety.”
EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell called the threat “irresponsible.” The EU condemns any threat of nuclear weapons, he said after a meeting of defense ministers in Brussels. It is not the first time that Russian leader Vladimir Putin has wanted to create uncertainty, emphasized Borrell.
Ukraine apparently fired six US missiles into Russian territory
The Russian Defense Ministry had previously said that on Tuesday night Kiev attacked a military facility in the Bryansk border region with six ballistic missiles. Long-range ATACMS missiles supplied by the USA were also used.
According to the ministry, five of the missiles were allegedly shot down by Russian air defenses. Debris from a sixth rocket fell on an unspecified “military facility” and caused a small fire. There were no injuries or damage.
It is the first attack since US President Joe Biden agreed to use long-range missiles from the US against targets in the Russian hinterland. Kiev had been demanding the green light from Washington for months.
