“Information about a serious air attack”: US embassy in Kyiv closes

Ukraine attacked Russia with ATACMS missiles from the USA. Moscow wants to react. Now the US embassy in Kiev is closing due to fears of a “severe air attack”.

The USA is temporarily closing its embassy in the Ukrainian capital Kyiv. This is what the embassy communicates on its website.

“Concrete information about a possible serious air attack on November 20th” was received. It is not mentioned exactly which cities the potential attack will take place in.

“As a precautionary measure, the embassy will be closed and embassy staff will be instructed to remain in their accommodation.” The U.S. Embassy recommends that U.S. citizens prepare to seek shelter immediately in the event of an air alert.

After the US embassy, the representations of Spain, Italy and Greece also announced that they would close their embassies to the public. Ukrainian public television reported, citing diplomatic sources, that a major combined attack involving combat drones and ballistic missiles was expected.

However, according to the Ukrainian secret service, Russia staged a “massive information-psychological attack” against Ukraine. A false message was spread via messenger services and social networks warning of imminent rocket and bomb attacks on Ukrainian cities. The message is fake and contains grammatical errors typical of Russian psychological operations.

Russia threatens Ukraine with nuclear weapons after ATACMS attack

After the Ukrainian army’s first attack on Russia with ATACMS missiles, Moscow threatened a response. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov announced an “appropriate” response and did not rule out the possible use of Russian nuclear weapons.

He also warned Ukraine’s Western allies that they should read Russian nuclear doctrine “in its entirety.” Russian President Vladimir Putin had immediately relaxed the existing rules for the use of nuclear weapons. The new doctrine also allows for a nuclear response to “massive” air strikes, even if they only use conventional weapons.

The White House strongly condemned the decree: “This is more of the same irresponsible rhetoric from Russia that we have seen over the past two years,” a spokesman for the US National Security Council told AFP.

According to the Defense Ministry in Moscow, Kiev attacked a military facility in the Russian border region of Bryansk with six ballistic missiles on Tuesday night. Long-range ATACMS missiles supplied by the USA were also used, it said. A Ukrainian government official confirmed the use of the missiles to the AFP news agency.
