A board that changes your world

In India, young women are breaking traditional role models – with a skateboard under their feet. The photographer Chantal Pinzi accompanied her.
In the “largest democracy in the world”, as India is often referred to, discrimination and violence against women is the order of the day. Abuse, abortion of female fetuses, kidnappings and rape are not isolated cases, but a mass phenomenon. Patriarchy still prevails, especially in rural areas, marriages are arranged, women have to bow to the will of men.
Skating, on the other hand, is – especially in India – counterculture. The board gives the young women a bit of freedom. They fall down and get up again and in the process also question established stereotypes.
The Italian photographer Chantal Pinzi came across the skaters by chance. But she was immediately fascinated by the social significance that sport has here, especially for girls. Pinzi decided to document the small but extremely committed scene and drove across the country at the beginning of this year. She calls her project “Shred the Patriarchy,” loosely translated: “Shred the Patriarchy” – and that’s exactly what the skaters want to do with four wheels and a board under their feet.
