Could Pistorius, as a candidate for chancellor, end up like Martin Schulz, who collapsed after a lot of hype? What is different today – and what risks there are for him anyway.
The candidate seemed invincible. Wherever he went, he filled the halls. He was in first place in the polls. The party unanimously elected him as its candidate. Then three state elections were lost and Martin Schulz fell. In the 2017 federal election, the SPD under him received the worst result in its history to date with 20.5 percent.
The trauma of the derailed “Schulz train” remains deep in the SPD to this day. In the current dispute over who should lead the SPD in the federal election campaign – Boris Pistorius or the incumbent Chancellor Olaf Scholz – it is cited again and again. It’s not just opponents of a candidacy for defense minister who are asking the question: Would Pistorius possibly be at risk of a Schulz effect?
