They already had little to live on and had to live directly at the container terminal in the port. Now the poor settlement Isla Puting Bato has burned down. Some escaped into the water.
Around 10,000 people and around 2,000 families lost their homes in a major fire in Manila. This was announced by the fire department of the Philippine capital. It is still unclear what the cause was. The fire broke out in the middle of the Isla Puting Bato residential area in Tondo district – a slum located between a Manila container port and the water.
Several firefighters were injured while extinguishing the fire. It is still unclear whether there are any injuries or even deaths among the residents. The fire spread very quickly.
Fire in the Manila slum raged for eight hours
The houses in the slum are not brick houses, but mostly self-assembled huts made of light and easily combustible material. The streets are so narrow that the fire brigade first has to break through parts of the wall to even get to the fire.
The flames were also fought from the air using Coast Guard and military helicopters. It took a total of eight hours until the fire was extinguished.
