Military expert Carlo Masala brings ground troops into the conversation

“Coalition of the Willing”
Military expert brings up European ground troops for Ukraine

The USA could reduce its aid to Ukraine under Donald Trump. Political scientist Carlo Masala calls for a “fallback option” – and does not rule out ground troops.

While supporting Ukraine, military expert Carlo Masala also raised the possibility of sending European ground troops should US President-elect Donald Trump drastically reduce military aid to Kiev. “We need a fallback option in the event that the USA stops supplying weapons to Ukraine,” Masala told the Germany editorial network. This is about a “coalition of the willing who, if in doubt, are also prepared to send ground troops to Ukraine.”

Carlo Masala: A lot is moving

In this regard, there is currently “a lot going on in France, Great Britain and Poland,” Masala explained. With regard to Germany, Masala said: “Germany is left out of most developments.” Federal Defense Minister Boris Pistorius (SPD) is “apparently pursuing the goal of bringing Germany back into the game.”

Pistorius met his colleagues from France, Great Britain and Poland, among others, in Berlin on Monday evening. According to participants, Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerow was also present at the meeting with French Defense Minister Sébastien Lecornu, British Defense Minister John Healey as well as their colleague from Poland, Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz, and Italian Defense State Secretary Isabella Rauti.

Concern about less help from the USA in Ukraine

After the meeting in the so-called five-party format, the minister confirmed that he wanted to further strengthen Ukraine in view of the latest developments in the Russian war of aggression. In particular, Germany, France, Great Britain, Italy and Poland would “continue to provide increased support to the Ukrainian defense industry,” he said afterwards. “Our goal: Ukraine must be able to act from a position of strength.”

Pistorius made the comments against the backdrop of US President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration in January. The former and future US president has sharply criticized the massive US aid to Ukraine. That is why there is concern in Ukraine and its European supporters that the USA under Trump could drastically reduce its military aid to the country.

The head of the Munich Security Conference, Christoph Heusgen, described the meeting to the RND as a “very important meeting”. “For now is the hour of Europe.” In view of a “continued aggressive Vladimir Putin and an unpredictable Donald Trump,” Europe must “take more responsibility and take care of its own security,” emphasized Heusgen. This can only be done together, not individually.
