A ceasefire between Israel and the Hezbollah militia appears to be within reach. But now Beirut has again been massively attacked by Israeli forces.
Shortly before a possible ceasefire in Lebanon, Israel’s military has again attacked targets in the heart of the capital Beirut and in the suburbs. In the center, a building in the area of the densely populated districts of Nuweiri and Ras Al Naba was bombed, eyewitnesses and security sources said. According to the Ministry of Health, at least three people were killed and at least 26 others were injured. The rescue work continued. Israel’s military had not issued a warning for the attack.
Massive air strike on Beirut: Israel attacks Lebanon’s capital shortly before negotiations
Israel’s air force carried out massive bombings in the capital’s suburbs known as Dahija, a stronghold of the Hezbollah militia. Eyewitnesses reported dozens of airstrikes and one of the heaviest waves of attacks since the recent escalation of war between Hezbollah and Israel’s military. Dense clouds of smoke rose and parts of the suburbs were in flames. An Israeli military spokesman had previously issued warnings for around 20 buildings in Dahija.
The Israeli army said 20 “terrorist targets” were attacked in the Beirut area, including 13 in Dahija. These include, among other things, a Hezbollah air defense center, command and intelligence centers and the organization’s ammunition depots. The attacks also targeted Hezbollah’s financial institutions.
The Israeli Air Force had already intensified its attacks in the suburbs over the weekend and, according to its own statements, destroyed, among other things, command centers of the pro-Iranian Hezbollah. There were also calls to evacuate the southern Lebanese city of Nakura, where the headquarters of the UN observation mission Unifil is located.
