Spain’s government is drawing conclusions from the storms that left more than 200 dead. In the future, employees should be able to take time off more easily in emergencies.
In view of natural disasters such as the devastating floods at the end of October, a “paid climate vacation” is being introduced in Spain: In the event of acute severe weather warnings, any trips or journeys should be avoided for up to four days, as Spanish Labor Minister Yolanda Díaz said on the broadcaster on Thursday RTVE said. The new regulation has already been decided in the Spanish cabinet.
In the event of a severe weather or flood warning issued by the authorities, employees can stay at home for four days and receive their wages from the state. This applies to warnings from the central government as well as to warnings from regional authorities or city administrations. The minister of the left-wing central government in Madrid did not provide any further details.
Storms in Spain led to more than 229 deaths
Following the devastating floods in eastern and southern Spain at the end of October, several companies came under fire for requiring employees to remain at work despite an urgent warning from weather authorities. The companies, in turn, blamed the authorities for warning too late.
Torrential rain caused massive flooding in the east and south of Spain at the end of October, killing 229 people, most of them in the Valencia region.
