According to Christian Mölling, there could be a change in strategy behind Putin’s threat to attack Kiev with his new missile. Now it’s up to the West.
Vladimir Putin’s recent threat that Russia would also attack non-military targets in Kiev with its new medium-range missile could be a new strategy by the Russian president, according to security expert Christian Mölling.
“Putin wants to maximize his negotiating position”
“I wouldn’t assume it’s a bluff,” says Mölling star– “The international situation”. Putin may be pursuing the goal of causing as much damage as possible in Ukraine before US President Donald Trump takes office. In this way, Mölling said, he could “maximize his negotiating position” before the war was ended or frozen under a new US administration.
Before his election, Trump announced that as president he would end the war in Ukraine “within 24 hours.”
On Thursday, at a meeting of the CSTO military alliance in Kazakhstan, Putin announced further attacks with the new missile on “decision-making centers in Kiev.” This could force the Ukrainian government to “concentrate its capacities on Kiev and leave other areas unprotected,” said Mölling.
The question is whether the West is prepared to provide protection against such systems.
