In the war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza, the debate about a two-state solution has flared up again. The United Nations has reiterated its support.
The UN General Assembly has called on Israel to withdraw from the occupied Palestinian territories and implement a two-state solution. On Tuesday (local time), members passed a resolution by 157 votes to eight expressing their “unwavering support” for a two-state solution in accordance with international law. The USA and Israel spoke out against it, and there were seven abstentions – Germany voted for the resolution.
Israelis and Palestinians should “live side by side in peace and security within the recognized borders on a pre-1967 basis,” the assembly said. She also called for an international meeting chaired by France and Saudi Arabia in June 2025 to advance diplomatic efforts towards a two-state solution.
Israel has occupied the West Bank for almost 60 years
The two-state solution envisages establishing a separate state for the Palestinians in the longer term. However, implementation has not progressed for years.
Israel has occupied the West Bank since 1967, and the country also maintained troops and settlements in the Gaza Strip between 1967 and 2005. Although Israel has since withdrawn, it is still considered an occupying power there. The United Nations considers the West Bank, East Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip to be unlawfully occupied by Israel.
