After South Korean President Yoon declared martial law, 190 MPs stormed parliament. Opposition and demonstrators are calling for his removal from office.
As a result of the temporary declaration of martial law in South Korea, thousands of protesters marched through the center of the capital Seoul on Wednesday. As journalists from the AFP news agency reported, they waved placards demanding the resignation of President Yoon Suk Yeol. The demonstrators moved on the main street towards the parliament, where another rally organized by the opposition was to take place.
Because of a budget dispute, Yoon declared martial law on Tuesday – and lifted it again a few hours later after a parliamentary vote. The opposition called for Yoon’s resignation and sought impeachment proceedings against the head of state. The largest opposition party, DP, also announced that it would sue Yoon and other high-ranking officials for sedition.
Immediately after martial law was declared, protests broke out in front of the temporarily locked down parliament.
