The chairman of the ruling party initially wanted to block the planned vote on impeachment proceedings against President Yoon Suk Yeol. Now there are signs of a turnaround.
The national crisis surrounding the ailing President Yoon Suk Yeol in South Korea is worsening. According to the South Korean news agency Yonhap, the chairman of the South Korean ruling party Han Dong Hoon said that he believes it is necessary for President Yoon to immediately renounce the exercise of his official duties for the time being. He initially left it open on Saturday whether he would vote for the motion submitted by the opposition to initiate impeachment proceedings.
On Thursday, Han Dong Hoon said he would try to get his party to vote against such a motion. Now he said he sees the danger that the president could act radically again. Late on Tuesday evening (local time), Yoon surprisingly put martial law into effect and lifted it again a few hours later after massive political resistance. It was the first time since South Korea’s transition to democracy in the late 1980s that the country’s head of state declared martial law.
The opposition then submitted a motion for impeachment proceedings in parliament. It is scheduled to come to the vote on Saturday. The largest opposition party accuses the conservative head of state of violating the constitution and is calling for his immediate resignation.
