President Emmanuel Macron wants to quickly present France’s new head of government. He not only has to end the government crisis, but also take pressure off Macron.
French President Emmanuel Macron is urgently looking for a new prime minister after the fall of the French government. Macron wants to nominate a new head of government in the coming days. “We cannot afford divisions or stagnation,” he said in an address to the nation on Thursday evening.
Some reports speculate that Macron would like to have a prime minister again before the ceremonial reopening of Notre Dame with numerous international heads of state on Saturday. The president has already held initial discussions.
With a quick appointment, Macron also wants to take himself out of the firing line. The fall of Prime Minister Michel Barnier’s center-right government through a vote of no confidence on Wednesday evening has noticeably increased the pressure on him. The left-wing party La France Insoumise called for Macron’s resignation. The head of state firmly rejected this. He will carry out his five-year mandate in full until it ends, i.e. until 2027.
The balance of power in France is complicated
In view of the looming economic problems, Macron announced that the new government’s priority would be to quickly develop a budget for the coming year. But first there should be a special law that will bridge the time until the budget is in place at the beginning of the year. How much leeway a new government has to implement the necessary austerity measures, which Barnier’s cabinet ultimately failed to implement, is unclear.

What exactly a new government might look like is also uncertain. Since the early parliamentary elections last summer, the political balance of power in Paris has been complicated. Neither Macron’s punished center forces, nor the left-wing camp, nor the right-wing nationalists around Marine Le Pen and their allies have enough seats to be able to govern alone.
