Thuringia
Circles: Agreement on Thuringian Prime Minister election

The CDU politician Mario Voigt wants to be elected as the new Prime Minister of Thuringia, but his coalition is missing a vote. Now there is probably an understanding with the left.

Before the prime ministerial election in Thuringia, the leaders of the CDU, BSW, SPD and the Left reached an agreement, according to negotiators. Accordingly, circles from both sides agreed that CDU politician Mario Voigt should be elected to office with votes from the Left in the first round of voting. The parliamentary groups still have to agree to the approach.

Part of the agreement is a specification that, among other things, provides for a monthly discussion format and is intended to exclude cooperation in parliament with the AfD. The agreement is reportedly intended to apply to the entire legislature. From circles in the Left parliamentary group it was said that several MPs wanted to vote for Voigt. However, there should be no compulsory faction.

The background to the agreements is the fear that Voigt could be elected to office in the first round with votes from the AfD. His blackberry coalition only has 44 of the 88 seats in parliament. In the first and second rounds, an absolute majority is required – 45 votes.
