What will Chancellor Scholz do if he loses the election? Certainly not one thing.
Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) does not want to become Vice Chancellor under Prime Minister Friedrich Merz (CDU) if he is defeated in the elections on February 23rd. “I wouldn’t do that,” he said in an interview with Deutschlandfunk Kultur when asked about this. “But I’m fighting to be chancellor again anyway,” he added.
The SPD is currently between 14 and 22 percent behind the Union in the polls, but has recently caught up slightly. Before becoming chancellor, Scholz was Vice Chancellor and Finance Minister under CDU Prime Minister Angela Merkel between 2018 and 2021. Possible deputies for Merz in a coalition between the Union and the SPD would be Defense Minister Boris Pistorius and SPD party leader Lars Klingbeil from the SPD.
When asked what he would do differently if he were chancellor again, Scholz said, alluding to the traffic light shutdown at the beginning of November: “Create clarity that there are certain things that the government will either continue or stop.” The question that remains for him today is whether he shouldn’t have ended the traffic light coalition beforehand.
