With the broadcasting fee, households pay a good 18 euros a month for public broadcasters. It stays that way – at least for now’s First.
The amount of the broadcasting fee remains at 18.36 euros for the time being. From the perspective of the federal states, the broadcasting fee should not increase in 2025 and 2026. Saxony-Anhalt’s Prime Minister Reiner Haseloff (CDU) said this after the Prime Minister’s Conference in Berlin. Brandenburg also confirmed the information. Prime Minister Dietmar Woidke (SPD) said: “After extensive discussions among the states, the contributions for citizens and companies remain stable. That’s good.” “Bild” had previously reported on it.
However, the question of the level of broadcasting fees is now before the Federal Constitutional Court in Karlsruhe. The public media ZDF and ARD filed a constitutional complaint in November so that the contribution would increase. How and when the court will decide is unclear.
Long argument about broadcasting fees
In Berlin, the Prime Ministers also decided on changes to the financing model according to which the broadcasting fee is generally determined.
The states have been arguing for a long time about increasing the current broadcasting fee by 58 cents to 18.94 euros. Financial experts – the Commission for Determining the Financial Requirements of Broadcasters (KEF) – recommended the increase for the next contribution period from 2025 to 2028. According to the procedure, the federal states must closely follow it.
The broadcasting fee is currently 18.36 euros per month. Households, companies and organizations pay the contribution to finance public broadcasting with ARD, ZDF and Deutschlandradio. In total, around nine billion euros come together every year.
