The former traffic light partners SPD, Greens and FDP want to vote together again and decide on relief. But the package could still fail in the Federal Council.
SPD parliamentary group leader Rolf Mützenich calls on the Union to approve the law to increase child benefit and to compensate for the cold progression in taxes. “In the coming week, the Union has the chance to give up its blockade stance motivated by party tactics,” Mützenich told the German Press Agency. “If the CDU and CSU continue to refuse this in the Bundestag, at least the Union-led states in the Bundesrat should ensure that this support is assured to people before Christmas.”
The minority coalition made up of the SPD and the Greens had agreed with the FDP to bring the draft through the Bundestag together. However, the consent of the Union-led states in the Federal Council is also necessary for it to come into force. The law is intended to prevent a creeping tax increase in January and to offset the negative effect of inflation on income tax. To achieve this, several key parameters in the tax rate should be shifted. In addition, child benefit is to increase by five euros to 255 euros from the beginning of the year. The child allowance and the immediate child allowance for low-income families are also increasing.
