During the European election campaign, attacks on politicians made headlines. Now there is a new case in the capital.

Suspected right-wing radicals attacked members of the SPD in Berlin. The SPD Steglitz-Zehlendorf announced on the Instagram platform that a party member was thrown to the ground and kicked in the stomach and face in the Lichterfelde district. Upon request, the police said that the attackers were people who were on their way to a right-wing demonstration in the Friedrichshain and Lichtenberg districts. They arrived from another federal state. The “Tagesspiegel” previously reported on the attack.

The incident on Kranoldplatz near Lichterfelde-Ost train station at midday initially resulted in verbal disputes with people who were running an SPD stand, a police spokesman said in the evening. Afterwards, physical injuries occurred against the stand operators. Five people were arrested and taken to a prison collection point, it was said in the evening.

The SPD wrote on Instagram that the attackers were right-wing radicals. Among those attacked was the chairwoman of the SPD parliamentary group in the Steglitz-Zehlendorf district council, Carolyn Macmillan. She was quoted in the post as saying she was still in shock. According to the post, district chairman Ruppert Stüwe said: “The election campaign in Steglitz-Zehlendorf begins with attacks by Nazis against democracy.” Both thanked the police, who responded quickly.
