For the first time, a North Korean soldier is said to have been taken prisoner in the Ukraine war. According to South Korean intelligence, he died shortly afterwards from his injuries.
The first North Korean soldier to be taken prisoner in Ukraine has reportedly died in the Ukraine war. The soldier fighting on Russia’s side was captured on Thursday during operations in the Russian front-line region of Kursk and succumbed to his injuries on Friday, South Korea’s news agency reported, citing the South Korean secret service (NIS). The NIS, in turn, refers to the “intelligence service of a friendly country”. It is not known what this is.
North Korea sent around 10,000 North Korean soldiers to Russia to support Moscow in the fight against Ukraine. After a short period of training and being equipped with Russian weapons, the North Korean fighters were integrated into the Russian forces that have been fighting near Kursk for some time. More than 3,000 North Korean soldiers are said to have already been killed or wounded. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky recently made this estimate, which cannot be independently verified, after a meeting of the high command of the Ukrainian armed forces.
