Markus Söder does not want to work together with the Greens. For him, they are the “main brakes on the issue of migration”. He also made sharp accusations against the party in other ways.
Markus Söder has once again decidedly ruled out a coalition with the Greens if the Union wins the election. When asked about this, the CSU chairman told “Bild am Sonntag” (BamS): “I am absolutely clear about that.” Söder justified this stance, among other things, by saying that the rejection of migrants at the German border, rejected by the Greens, was “elementary” for the Union. “That’s why it’s clear to us that the Greens are leaving.”
Söder described the Greens as the “main brake on the issue of migration”. The party is starting from “a completely wrong idea”. At the same time, Bavaria’s Prime Minister made sharp accusations against the party. The Greens have “almost mentally enslaved themselves to Robert Habeck.” About a possible further term of office for the Green Federal Economics Minister, Söder said: “It would be a disaster for the mood in Germany, for the economy – because economics is also psychology – if Habeck were reappointed as Economics Minister.”
Markus Söder categorically excludes the coalition
In the “BamS” interview, Söder attributed the Union’s stagnating poll numbers to the uncertainty of many potential Union voters. Many would ask themselves: “Will it be enough for a fundamental change? Or is it just a change of government instead of a change of direction? Does that mean Angela Merkel 4.0? Or is it actually a new government, with a new style and mentality?”
Söder has categorically ruled out a coalition with the Greens for months. This limits the alliance options for the Union after the election. According to current surveys, only the SPD would be considered as a partner. According to the ARD “Deutschlandtrend”, the Greens are currently on a par with the SPD, and in the ZDF “Politbarometer” they are one percentage point behind the Social Democrats. The CDU/CSU are still in first place and the AfD is in second place.
