Moscow excludes Germany from UN Security Council seat

Germany has worked for years to improve its own status in the United Nations. But there is now a clear message from Russia.
Moscow has categorically rejected Germany’s request for a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council. If the UN Security Council were to be reformed, there would be countries that would never be permanent members, even if they aspired to be, said Russia’s UN representative Vasily Nebenzya on Russian state television. “We are specifically talking about Germany and Japan.” Discussions about reforming the Security Council have been going on in the United Nations for years.
India and African countries in particular are hoping for a permanent seat on the committee. But the federal government has also been trying to do this for a long time. While Russia was for a while considered a possible supporter of such an arrangement, tensions between Moscow and the West have risen dramatically in recent years, especially after the outbreak of the war of aggression against Ukraine ordered by Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin.
The chances were therefore recently considered poor. Each of the five permanent members, China, France, Great Britain, Russia and the USA, can use their veto to block an expansion.
