At the end of her visit to Syria, Annalena Baerbock visits the German embassy building, which was closed in 2012 for security reasons. And discovers a familiar face.
Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock took a look at the state of the German embassy in Damascus, which has been closed since 2012. While viewing the property in the Syrian capital, she took a cell phone selfie in front of a portrait of then Federal President Christian Wulff that was still hanging on the wall of the ambassador’s room. The Green politician said she would send the photo to Wulff.
Baerbock visits the embassy with flashlight light
Baerbock had to look at the German embassy premises by flashlight – there was a power outage in Damascus that evening. The embassy was closed in 2012 for security reasons. The then ambassador had already been withdrawn in 2011 in protest against the actions of the then Syrian ruler Bashar al-Assad.
In recent years, the building has been looked after by a local employee who has been working for the embassy for 26 years. He led the minister through the house. It is unclear whether and when the German embassy in Damascus will reopen. It depends above all on further political developments.
