This is how the parties and the chancellor candidates Olaf Scholz and Friedrich Merz stand in the current surveys. There will be early federal elections next year.
It was already clear that a new Bundestag would be elected in Germany in 2025. The last elections took place on September 26, 2021. Now the new election is coming sooner than expected. On November 6th, Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) fired FDP Finance Minister Christian Lindner, thereby sealing the end of the traffic light coalition. The next steps: The Chancellor asks the Bundestag for a vote of confidence and then asks Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier to dissolve the Bundestag, which clears the way for new elections. Steinmeier has already signaled that he will comply with this so that the early elections can take place on February 23, 2025.
