The Ukraine Contact Group met in Washington for the last time before the transition of power. The outgoing Defense Minister says goodbye with an appeal.
Before the change of government in the USA, the outgoing US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin appealed to the countries supporting Ukraine to continue to help the country attacked by Russia. “We can’t stop now,” Austin said. “The coalition supporting Ukraine must not hesitate. It must not waver and it must not fail.” It’s about the survival of Ukraine.
The USA has so far been the main supporter of Ukraine, which has been fending off an invasion by Russia since February 2022. It is uncertain what will happen with aid under the future US President Donald Trump. Austin was reticent to answer questions about it. “I’m not going to speculate on what direction they’ll take,” he said. On the question of how reliable the US remained within NATO under Trump, Austin said: “The United States has always been a reliable partner.”
Austin, for whom it was the last meeting in Ramstein, praised the work of the Ukraine Contact Group. In the almost three years of its existence, the members have pledged support in the area of security worth more than 126 billion US dollars (around 122 billion euros). Russia is paying a “horrible price” for its war, Austin said. He put the number of injured and killed Russian soldiers at more than 700,000.
