Donald Trump is not exactly known for inner calm or restraint – that’s exactly why the Chinese artist Hong Jinshi immortalized the future US president as a Buddha figure and is very successful with it. The white ceramic statues, which show Trump sitting cross-legged with a long robe and half-closed eyes, are enjoying great popularity again shortly before the start of his second term in office.
Trump Buddha in several sizes
Hong first offered his Trump Buddha to the Chinese online mail order company Taobao in 2021. Since then, the 47-year-old has sold hundreds of copies – depending on the size, for between 999 and 20,000 yuan (133 to 2,675 euros). Since the US presidential election in November, the Trump Buddhas have been in great demand again: “There was a lot of interest in the days after his election victory,” reports Hong, who originally designed the statues as a joke.
“It’s fun to make fun of respected people and famous people,” says Hong about his motives. Trump works so well as a Buddha in a meditation position because it involves “two opposite extremes.” Trump is also not as “boring” as other politicians, says Hong. “When he’s president, there’s interesting news every day.”
