The Republicans have pushed a new law through the House of Representatives. Losers could be trans people. But the last word has not yet been spoken.
The Republican-majority U.S. House of Representatives passed a bill on Tuesday that would ban trans people in schools and universities from participating in sports competitions with other women and girls. Passage by the Senate is considered unlikely.
The law defines gender as “based solely on a person’s reproductive biology and genes at birth.” It would also ban trans people from becoming part of a women’s sports team at a publicly funded school or university.
In the House of Representatives, 218 members voted for the bill, including two Democrats. To be passed in the Senate, a majority of 60 votes is required. It is considered unlikely that enough democratic supporters can be found for this.
Trans people are hate figures for some Republicans
For Republicans, who have been campaigning on the issue of trans people in women’s sports for years, the passage was a symbolic victory. “House Republicans have once again stood up for women,” said House Speaker Mike Johnson.
The lobby group Equality California, however, criticized the law as “another attempt to deny trans youth the dignity and respect they deserve.”
