Women accuse Berlin MP Stefan Gelbhaar of harassing them. But now it turns out: The most serious allegations are probably made up.
Who is Anne K.? Under these names, a woman had made harassment allegations against Green Party politician Stefan Gelbhaar, which is why the Bundestag member had to give up his candidacy. But now doubts about the person’s identity are increasing. The public broadcaster Berlin-Brandenburg (RBB), which made the allegations public, is therefore withdrawing parts of its reporting.
“Not all of the allegations we reported on are automatically invalid – but a significant allegation is. We have therefore decided to remove all articles that deal with specific allegations from the internet,”
“It is highly likely that Anne K. does not exist”
The woman who claimed to be Anne K. is said to be a Berlin district politician from the Green Party. She described an alleged attack by Gelbhaar to the RBB under the name. Anne K., the station now says, was not who she claimed to be. “It’s very likely that this woman doesn’t even exist.”
The district politician could also be behind allegations that were anonymously reported to the Green Party ombudsman. The woman now targeted denies the alleged fraud. “However, she was unable to show the broadcaster any evidence that Anne K. existed,” said the newspaper. The RBB reported the local politician on suspicion of fraud.
Further accusations with a “lower case height”
The RBB based its reporting on several affidavits from women. , that although there are other allegations in addition to the “essential allegation”, they are of a “lower magnitude”.
Doubts arose about K.’s existence because the woman could not be reached by the RBB and she could neither be found at the registered address given nor was she known to the residents.
The Green politician Stefan Gelbhaar has been a member of the Bundestag since 2017 and was the first Green to ever win a direct mandate in East Germany in the 2021 election. He withdrew his candidacy for a place on the Berlin Greens’ state list for the federal election in February at short notice in mid-December and justified this with allegations against him, without being more specific.
On New Year’s Eve, the Green politician made a detailed statement: “The allegations are lies,” he explained. The process must be “a partially planned action” with the aim of massively discrediting him.
Julia Schneider is taking part in the race instead of Stefan Gelbhaar
Even before the turn of the year, the Pankow district association had announced that it would again vote on the direct candidacy. At the election meeting on January 8th, three applicants ran, including Gelbhaar himself. In the end, state representative Julia Schneider prevailed by a clear margin. At the first election meeting in mid-November, Gelbhaar was elected as the direct candidate with 98.4 percent of the vote.
